COMMISSARY FAST FACTS – ISSUE 183 – February 2017

Commissaries begin measuring regional savings

Commissary savings will be reported more often and better reflect the cost of living where patrons shop, said the director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency. “What we did before was good for showing a worldwide, annual savings average,” said Joseph H. Jeu. “However, now we are diving deeper into our patrons’ shopping experience to better reflect regional differences in cost of living and actual shopping patterns.” Historically, DeCA measured savings globally, by comparing national prices at commissaries against average market prices for the whole country. However, the cost of living varies by region. To account for these geographic differences, Congress now requires DeCA to report on savings regionally, comparing prices with two-to-three commercial grocers, including super centers, in the local area of each commissary in the United States. For more on DeCA’s private label program, visit the transformation FAQs at https://commissaries.com/documents/contact_deca/faqs/transformation.cfm.

Commissaries are all heart for health awareness, Valentine’s Day

Health awareness, the Super Bowl and Cupid’s holiday take center stage as commissaries showcase extra savings in February. “Our Nutrition Guide Program makes it easy for you to choose a better lifestyle since we’ve researched product ingredients and designated key nutrient attributes with color-coded shelf labels for your convenience,” said Tracie Russ, the Defense Commissary Agency’s director of sales. “Health and wellness is an especially appropriate theme for February when it comes to finding commissary products that fit National Heart Month guidelines.” In addition to Heart Month, DeCA’s industry partners – vendors, suppliers and brokers – are collaborating with commissaries to offer discounts beyond everyday savings through sales promotions relating to February events such as the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day. Overseas stores may have substitute events for certain promotions. Patrons can also see the Sales Flyer at www.commissaries.com or get a copy at the store entrance.
